Hotels in Ios island, and how close to the party to sleep
Five areas of Ios, what each one sounds like at night, how you get back to it from the bars, and the hotels in every one.
Ios has two sets of visitors, and they barely overlap. One comes for the nights in Chora, the hilltop village where the bars run until dawn all summer. The other comes for Mylopotas and Manganari, some of the best sand in the Cyclades. Choosing between the hotels in Ios island really means choosing how far from the square in Chora you want to sleep.

The island is small, and almost everything happens along one line: the port at sea level, Chora on the hill above it, and Mylopotas on the other side of the ridge. Everywhere else is a drive. You can see how Ios sits between Naxos and Santorini on our map of the Cyclades.
For the nights, and only if you want them
Chora

Chora is the village on the hill, and on Ios it is also the nightlife. The bars are packed into the lanes around the main square and the church, dozens of them within a few minutes of each other, and from late June to the end of August they run until four or five in the morning, with the clubs on the road down towards Mylopotas carrying on after that. By day it is a beautiful village: stepped lanes, windmills on the ridge and the Panagia Gremiotissa church above it all. Sleep inside the village and you walk home in two minutes, which is the whole appeal, and you hear the music until it stops. The hotels on the outer edge, a few streets from the square, are the compromise: still on foot, a lot less bass.

Mylopotas
Beach bars by night, day parties at Far Out · 10 min to Chora by bus
Mylopotas is the beach, a kilometre of sand in a sheltered bay three kilometres below Chora, and it is where most visitors to Ios actually sleep. It is not silent. Far Out Beach Club, on the sand, runs day parties, and the beach bars keep going into the evening, but the real noise stays up in the village, and the hotels on the slopes above either end of the bay are calm at night. What makes Mylopotas the default is the bus: it runs up to Chora every half hour or so until late, which is ten minutes, so you can go out in the village and come back down to the beach without being part of the noise when you want to sleep. After the last bus, it is a taxi you will not find or a half-hour walk downhill.

Gialos, the port
Quiet at night, ferries at odd hours · 5 min to Chora by bus
Gialos, also written Yialos and sometimes just called Ormos or the port, is where the ferry lands, and most people walk straight past it to the bus. The village runs along the harbour to Gialos beach, a sandy, shallow bay a ten-minute walk from the quay that is calmer than Mylopotas and good for children. Chora is on the hill directly above: five minutes by bus, or fifteen to twenty minutes on foot up the old stepped path. The nights are quiet because the party is up the hill, and the one thing you do hear is the ferries, which dock at all hours in summer. For a first visit that wants Chora in the evening and a proper night's sleep, this is the answer.

Kolitsani, Tzamaria and Koumbara

West of the harbour, the coast turns towards Koumbara, the last beach before the headland, with Tzamaria just before it, and Kolitsani is a small cove between the port and Chora. This is the side of the island that faces the sunset, and it has very few hotels, mostly villas and a handful of suites built for couples. Nights are silent. The Koumbara bus runs from the port, but the times are built around beach days, so a car or a scooter makes this work.

Manganari and the south
Silent at night · 35 min to Chora by car
Manganari is a set of sandy coves on the south coast, often called the most beautiful beach on Ios, and the island's night life could be on another island. The road from Chora takes about half an hour, and the bus goes once a day in each direction, at 12:30 out and 17:30 back on the current timetable. There are rooms at the beach and one very expensive hotel nearby, Calilo, on its own bay at Papas beach. Staying here means you have seen the Ios of the postcards and skipped the other one, or that you hired a car to have both.

How far from Chora: the walk home at 4am
This is the question that decides a stay on Ios, and hotel listings never answer it. Pick where you would sleep and see what reaches you from the square, and what getting back there at the end of the night actually involves.

Bus times are from the KTEL Ios timetable in force from 12 September 2026. In July and August the buses run more often and later into the night, and the timetable posted at the stop is the one that counts.
Where not to stay on Ios
No part of the island is bad in itself. The mistakes come from booking the right place for the wrong trip.
Central Chora, if you want to sleep
A room two lanes from the square is perfect for a night out and miserable for anyone else from late June to August. The music stops around five, and the street noise a little later. Families and couples who picked the village for its looks should stay on its outer edge, or in Gialos.
Manganari or Koumbara, if you came for Chora
The quiet corners are quiet because nothing reaches them after dark. From Manganari the only bus back leaves at 17:30, and a taxi at two in the morning, on an island with only a handful of them, is a gamble.
The middle of Mylopotas, if you want an early night
The bay is calm compared to Chora, but the stretch around the beach club is where the day parties happen and where people drift home from the last bus. The slopes at either end of the bay are the quiet part.
Anywhere without a plan for the last bus
The bus between the port, Chora and Mylopotas stops well before the bars do. On the September timetable the last one leaves Chora at 23:05. If your hotel is not in the village, know how you will get back before you go out.
When the party runs, and when it does not
Everything above about noise is about July and August, and to a lesser extent late June, when students and groups of friends from Europe, Australia and the US fill the island. That is when Chora goes until dawn and Far Out runs its day parties. In May, early June and September, the bars open later and close earlier, the crowd is older and more mixed, and the whole calculation changes: a hotel in the village becomes a perfectly reasonable choice for a couple.
Ios is a seasonal island. Most hotels open from May to early October and close for the winter, and outside those months the buses thin out, the ferries are fewer and much of Chora is shuttered. If you want the island at its prettiest without the crowds, June and September are the months.
Getting around without a car
The KTEL bus is the backbone of the island. It runs from the port up to Chora and down to Mylopotas and back all day, every half hour or so and more often in high season, for €2.20 a ride, and it takes five minutes from the quay to the village and ten more to the beach. Tickets come from machines at the port terminal and at the Mylopotas stop by Far Out. Other lines go to Koumbara, Agia Theodoti and Psathi, and Manganari gets one bus a day, at 12:30, back at 17:30.
Taxis are the weak point: there are only a handful for the whole island, and in August you call ahead or wait. Most visitors rent a scooter, a quad or a small car for a day or two to reach the south and east coasts. Otherwise, a boat trip around the island covers the beaches that the road barely reaches.
What a room costs, and is Ios expensive
Ios is one of the cheaper islands in the Cyclades, because most of its beds were built for backpackers. Taking the starting rates in the Hotels.com catalogue as an order of magnitude, a simple room in Chora or Gialos starts at around €30 to €60 a night (about $35 to $70) outside August, and Mylopotas at around €40 to €90 ($45 to $100). The suites above Mylopotas start well above €150 ($170) in season, and Calilo is in another league, above €400 ($450) a night. August can double everything below the luxury end.
Compared with its neighbours, that makes Ios good value: less than a room on Santorini for a similar standard, and in the same range as the hotels on Naxos, the island to the north.
Getting to Ios
There is no airport on Ios, so everyone arrives at Gialos by boat. From Piraeus it is about four hours on a high-speed ferry and around seven on the conventional one, which calls at Paros and Naxos on the way, as our Athens to Santorini ferry guide explains. Questions people ask about staying on Ios
Where should I stay in Ios for nightlife?
In Chora, or at the Mylopotas end nearest to it. The bars and clubs of Ios are packed into the lanes around the main square of Chora, with a few more on the road down to Mylopotas, and they run until four or five in the morning in July and August. Staying in the village means walking home in minutes. Mylopotas is the other option: ten minutes by bus, with the beach on your doorstep, but after the last bus the way back is a half-hour walk downhill.
Is Ios only a party island?
No, but the party is what it is known for, and in July and August it sets the tone in Chora. The rest of the island is quiet: Gialos, the port, is calm at night, the west side around Koumbara is silent, and Manganari in the south is as peaceful as any beach in the Cyclades. In May, June and September the whole island is gentler, and Chora goes back to being one of the prettiest villages in the Cyclades.
Is Mylopotas loud at night?
Not the way Chora is. The beach bars and Far Out Beach Club keep the middle of the bay lively in the evening, and there are day parties on the sand in high season, but the clubs are up in the village. Hotels on the slopes above either end of the bay are quiet at night. If you want real silence, Gialos or the west side are safer.
Where to stay in Ios as a couple or a family?
Gialos, the port village. It has a sandy, shallow beach ten minutes from the quay, quiet streets at night, and Chora five minutes above by bus for dinner. Kritikakis Village takes only families and couples, which on Ios keeps the party groups away. Couples with a bigger budget look at the suites of Tzamaria for the sunsets, or at the slopes above Mylopotas.
What is the best 5 star hotel on Ios?
Calilo, on its own bay at Papas beach near Manganari, is the island's five star and priced accordingly. It is about 35 minutes from Chora, so it suits people who want to be away from the nightlife rather than near it. Closer to the action, Ios Palace and Hide Out Suites above Mylopotas and Agalia Luxury Suites at Tzamaria are the other hotels people mean when they talk about luxury on Ios.
Is Ios, Greece expensive?
Much less than Santorini or Mykonos. Ios built most of its beds for backpackers and students, so simple rooms in Chora and Gialos still start at around €30 to €60 a night outside August (about $35 to $70), and bars and gyros are cheap. The top end has caught up: the suites above Mylopotas and Calilo cost what luxury costs anywhere in the Cyclades.
Can you get around Ios without a car?
Between the port, Chora and Mylopotas, yes: the KTEL bus links the three every half hour or so, more often in July and August, and it takes five minutes from the port to Chora and ten from Chora to the beach. Beyond that it gets thin. Manganari has one bus a day, taxis are few for the whole island, and most people rent a scooter, a quad or a small car for a day or two to see the rest.
How many days do you need on Ios?
Three to four nights is the usual stay, enough for Mylopotas, a trip to Manganari and a couple of nights out in Chora. Two nights works as a stop between Naxos and Santorini on a hopping trip. A week is for people who came for the beaches as much as the bars and want time on the quieter coves of the south and east.
Does Ios have an airport?
No. You arrive by ferry. The closest airport is on Santorini, 45 minutes to an hour and a half away by boat, and Naxos and Paros also have small airports with ferries to Ios. From Athens, the ferry from Piraeus takes about four hours on a fast boat and around seven on the conventional one that stops at Paros and Naxos on the way.
Ios or Santorini, where to stay?
They are neighbours, and many people do both. Santorini is the caldera, the sunsets and the famous villages, at the highest prices in Greece. Ios is cheaper, younger and better for beaches, with Mylopotas and Manganari. The ferry between them is under two hours, so a common plan is to sleep on Ios and visit Santorini for a day, or the other way round.
